In response to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, the U.S. government pledged to welcome up to 95,000 Afghans. The U.S. Employers’ Guide to Hiring Afghan Refugees is a manual for businesses that answers common questions about how to hire recently arrived Afghans, including critical information for human resources teams, such as:

  • A fact sheet on Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders, refugees, and parolees, where they are likely to resettle, and an overview of their educational and professional backgrounds.
  • The business benefits of hiring Afghans.
  • Logistical guidance for businesses on how to hire Afghans.
  • A list of organizations to connect with if companies are interested in hiring Afghans, as well as additional resources for employers to support these hiring efforts.

This guide is a collaboration between the Tent Partnership for Refugees and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), the largest faith-based national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to serving refugees, asylum seekers, and other vulnerable immigrant communities in the U.S. As a national resettlement organization, LIRS has more than 25 years of experience across the U.S. supporting refugee career entry and advancement.
