PRESS RELEASE: Tent Partnership for Refugees and the U.S. Department of State Announce Global Partnership to Support Economic Integration of Refugees

  • Memorandum of Understanding formalizes partnership that will seek to mobilize U.S. and international businesses to hire refugees

Washington D.C., December 12, 2022 The Tent Partnership for Refugees (Tent) and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) are pleased to announce a public-private partnership to support employment opportunities and economic integration for refugees and other forcibly displaced people. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Tent founder Hamdi Ulukaya signed a memorandum of understanding today formalizing this partnership.

Tent, a business coalition made up of more than 300 multinational companies, has been committed to supporting refugees through hiring, training, and mentorship since it was founded by Ulukaya in 2016.

This partnership with the U.S. Department of State recognizes Tent’s unique capacity to mobilize U.S. and international businesses to reduce barriers for refugees to enter the workforce – a critical step for refugees’ long-term integration and the flourishing of communities that welcome them.

“I am thrilled to formalize Tent’s partnership with the U.S. government and look forward to cooperating closely in order to persuade many more businesses to step up and provide economic opportunities for refugees,” said Gideon Maltz, Executive Director at Tent. “The global business community has such an important role to play in improving the lives and livelihoods of refugees, and this will help many more refugees find work and thrive in their new communities.”

About the Tent Partnership for Refugees
With more and more refugees displaced for longer periods of time, businesses have a critical role to play in helping refugees integrate economically in their new host communities. The Tent Partnership for Refugees mobilizes the global business community to improve the lives and livelihoods of more than 36 million refugees who have been forcibly displaced from their home countries. Founded by Chobani’s founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya in 2016, we are a network of over 300 major companies committed to including refugees. Tent believes that companies can most sustainably support refugees by leveraging their core business operations and hiring, training, and mentoring refugees.
